An old wild island, surrounded by the most beautiful sea in Italy. The perfume of myrtle, rock rose, thyme and other marvellous plants of the Mediterranean undergrowth cover the mountains and hills right up to the sea. The region offers an abundance of crystalline waters and marvellous beaches alternated with wild cliffs, rich in broom and oleanders which offer paradisiacal landscapes. From Capocaccia, lying north of Alghero, from the fantastic Cala Domestica, almost a fjiord in the heart of the southern-eastern coast, to the Gulf of Orosei, with its incredible golden cliffs, right up to the famous Emerald Coast, the playground of the international jet set. All water sports can be practised in the sea, scuba diving, on account of the wealth of its sea beds and sailing, which enables one to discover uncontaminated, magical and unforgettable coves. Rich in tradition, the region boasts beautiful cities which house Romanic cathedrals and Baroque churches. There are also several interesting archaeological areas housing the remains of the Punic cities of Tharros and Nora, the Roman and medieval architectural sites in Cagliari and Porto Torres. In the inland, you will discover the remains of primitive civilisations such as the Nuraghi, large, cone-shaped stone buildings, and pre-historic Menhirs. The complex Nuragico of Barumini makes an impact on account of its architectural complexity and its mysterious origins. The geological morphology of the region is unique and special: extensive areas of calcareous rocks, such as Supermonte in the province of Nuoro, are alternated with granite rocks moulded by the wind, like those found on the island of the Maddalena or the red porphyry rocks of Arbatax. Inland of the mountainous regions which culminate at the centre in the Gennargentu massif, we find a vegetation rich in holm oaks and cork oaks. Whilst travelling along the Campidano plains we reach Cagliari, a capital city rich in monuments. In the southern part of the region, white sandy beaches and transparent water are precede by lagoons and rock pools inhabited by a variety of marvellous birdlife such as rose flamingos and other migratory birds. Numerous islands are protected because of their natural heritage, for example the Asinara, La Maddalena, Sant’Antiaco and the Serpentara.
